About Michelle Wilkie

She lives in North Carolina with her husband and 10-year-old son.  She has loved being part of the quilting community and has a passion for Modern Quilting. She started quilting in 2012, and has gained a lot of experience and had many wonderful opportunities in that time. Her favorite part of quilting is designing and turning the design into reality.

She has taught classes of various topics for over 15 years to various audiences (kids, undergraduates to adults).  She now teaches a variety of quilting workshops, covering techniques of Quilt designing, Improvisational Piecing, Hand piecing and more. Michelle is a regular contributor to Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine and the MQG.

She loves to share her experiences and what she learns via her blog (Factotum of Arts https://factotum-of-arts.com) and Instagram (@ml_wilkie https://instagram.com/ml_wilkie). Some of her other interests include Science Fiction/Fantasy movies and books, photography, traveling and baking/cooking.

  • Trunk Show description: A Multimedia presentation of my journey as a quilt designer and quilter. I love the ability to combine my love of art and color with my science and math background. Quilting gives me that chance.

Saturday, May 5th: Improv Shapes and Lines Workshop

  • 9:30 AM  4:00 PM
  • Patch Reef Park (map)
  • Description: Improvisational quilting can be very freeing as there are no rules. This class introduces you to using various shapes, such as circles, triangles, string pieces to make your own unique improvisational quilt composition. Other techniques will also be covered to help you build your composition.

Sunday, May 6th: Modern Design - Spark to Design Workshop

  • 9:30 AM  4:00 PM
  • Once Upon A Quilt (map)
  • Description: This class will illustrate and step you through how to create a Modern quilt design using inspiration from everyday things around you. Several exercises are designed to help you tune the skill of seeing, identifying design elements and building a composition. Once you have a design, skills to turn that design into reality will be shared.
  • Design focused. There may be some time at end of class to use machines.
