Glam Clam Scrappy
SFMQG is very excited to be hosting Latifah Saafir the weekend of August 4th, 5th and 6th 2017.
Note this workshop will be held at the Sugar Sand Park Community Center which opens promptly at 10am.
Sunday August 6th will be full day workshop. We will be making the GLAM CLAM QUILT. Everything is better when it’s bigger right? Even clam shells? Learn an alternative to hand piecing clam shells, by learning to piece these with your sewing machine. They are big, bold, and fun. Learn the tricks and tips to piece your very own 8” or 12” Glam Clam Quilt in any quilt size that you’d like without pins and without ironing!
The class is designed for you to make either the 8” or 12” Glam Clam. Save the 6” to play with after the class! If this is your first time sewing curves, then I suggest the 12”. It is much easier! This class uses the Glam Clam Quilt Pattern and either the 8” or 12” The Clammy™ templates. The pattern includes baby through king sized layouts and you can make any size that you would like. Note that the only quilts that may be finished in class will be a baby sized quilt and maybe the lap sized if you’re working on a 12”. But, you will get a lot done on larger sizes and will go home confident enough in the technique to be able to finish your quilt easily.
Supplies
- Glam Clam Quilt Pattern
- The Clammy™ 8” or 12”
- Fabric requirements vary by size and are included in the pattern
- Coordinating thread for piecing
- A few straight pins
- 28mm Rotary Cutter (especially for the 8” Clammy™)
- Cutting Mat
- Acrylic Ruler
Optional Supplies
- 1/4” foot with flange for your sewing machine - strongly suggested
- Knee lift - if your machine has one bring it
- Stiletto (like The Purple Thing)
Pre-Work
Your pre-work before class is to cut out your whole clamshells. This can take awhile and I don’t want your whole class to be spent cutting out clamshells. If you can’t cut them all out, then at least cut out the first three rows. We will cut out the peripheral shapes - sides, top, bottom, etc during class.
If in fact you get to class and don’t have pre-work done or you waited too late to purchase your Clammy template then I’ll have patterns and templates in class. Just note, that you’ll spend the first hour or so of precious class time cutting.
Layout
If you need layout assistance, feel free to cut out enough to start to lay your quilt out and we will work on layout in class before you start to sew. Following are some layout ideas for you to think about. Open a coloring sheet that you can save and then print as you wish. Feel free to Contact Latifah if you have questions!
