Diana Li Fitzgerald - The Perception of Randomness
We tend to feel we have a sense of what looks and feels random. But this sense often detects randomness where there is none, or fails to identify randomness where it exists. In her own work, Diana strives to create a seemingly random placement of patchwork pieces that have actually been selected and positioned according to simple rules. Paradoxically, the rules she follows are exactly what creates a pattern that appears random or haphazard to our eye. Let’s dig into this interesting phenomenon and how it appears in our everyday lives. Then, Diana will apply this idea in an experiment by laying out a patchwork and talk about what we can do to create a sense of randomness in our sewing projects. Includes a handout for attendees so they can practice what I discuss during the lecture.
Time: 1pm EST (approx. 1 hour + Q&A, with regular Guild meeting to follow)
Cost: The lecture is free to members. Zoom link will be sent via email or can be found in Facebook Members Only Group Events Lecture will not be recorded.
