Embroidery workshop and lecture with Red Thread Studios

Following our plan to educate members about the categories open to competition in the Modern Quilt Guild's annual QuiltCon show and convention, the topic of our January workshop and lecture will be hand embroidery.

Quiltcon's Handwork category invites entries that feature at least one element of handwork including, but not limited to: hand piecing, hand quilting, embroidery, red work, cross stitch, crewel, etc.

On January 23rd, SFMQG will be hosting a day of hand embroidery fun! We have invited Jennifer Lee of Red Thread Studios to visit us for a lecture/trunk show, followed by a workshop in the afternoon.

Jennifer Lee of Red Thread Studio

Jennifer Lee is a Palm City resident and the maker behind Red Thread Studio. Inspired by watching her grandmother quilt and crochet when she was a girl, Jen has always enjoyed making things with her hands. When she struggled to find time to sit at her sewing machine, she looked for other ways to be creative. Enter sashiko (Japanese embroidery) and English paper piecing!  These mobile stitch crafts allowed Jen to feed her passion for creating even while she is on the go. Jen named her business after an old Chinese proverb that says an invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle but will never break. With the modern stitcher in mind, Red Thread Studio offers a unique selection of quality kits, patterns, and fabrics sourced from new and upcoming designers located in the US and abroad.

You may remember Jen’s booth at BQE with really cute modern embroidery and quilt patterns. Checkout her website, blog and Facebook page for the products she carries and the modern designers she features.

Jen's United Stitches quilt.

Jen also organized a United Stitches charity quilt project that Debby and I signed up for.  We received a cute well organized kit of our choice to stitch for this lovely quilt. You will be able to see the quilt in person at her trunk show.

We will start the day with Jen giving a lecture and trunk show about hand embroidery (sashiko and traditional) and her experiences running Red Thread Studio. Following this Jen will have a sale table with lots of tempting kits and supplies available. We will take a lunch break and the hand embroidery workshop will start at 12:30.

You can come to just the lecture for $5 ($4 for SFMQG members) which includes a $4 voucher towards any of the items that Red Thread Studio is selling on the day.

The workshop is $40 ($32 for SFMQG members) which includes a supply kit with practice fabric, embroidery hoop, needle, floss and a pre-printed design block for you to embroider. The block can be used in a quilt, or turned into a pillow or bag, or simply framed and hung as art.  If you register for the workshop, the lecture/trunk show is included for free. There are limited quantities of three different designs available as kits, so be sure to reserve your space now to get the kit you want!
