February Meeting Recap

The February meeting was action-packed! Follow the links below for more detail on each item.

Ice breaker

As an ice breaker, we discussed QuiltCon. QuiltCon runs Thursday, February 23rd - Sunday, February 26th in Savannah, Georgia. There are a good number of SFMQG members headed up! Can't wait to hear about everyone's experience at the March meeting.

BQE

Charlotte brought us up to date on BQE. She has taken in all the quilts and judging is done! BQE is Thursday-Saturday, March 9, 10 and 11 at War Memorial Auditorium in Ft Lauderdale.  Many of us are taking classes and plan to be at the show for one or more days.  At the last two SFMQG monthly meetings members have been given raffle tickets to sell for our beautiful "Beach Blanket Improv" quilt.  The winner of our quilt will be drawn at 2pm on Saturday the 11th.  If you have money and ticket stubs or unsold tickets to turn in please bring them to the show and drop them off at the SFMQG table in the lobby of the auditorium.  If you are not able to get to the show please drop them off to someone who will be coming.  If you would like to mail them to me please CALL Linda Gordon at 954-977-9101 for my address.

We will be selling raffle tickets at our table at the show and are asking members to sign up for 2 hour stints.  You will meet lots of interesting people and be answering questions about the SFMQG and out gorgeous quilt.

The table is covered on Thursday, the 9th.  We need volunteers for Friday the 10th for 10-12, 12-2 and 2-4.  Also, you may sign up for Saturday the 11th for 10-12 or 12-2.  It is a great way to see the show and support our guild all in the same day.  Please call Linda Gordon 954-977-9109 to take a spot. And a huge thanks for everyone's involvement!!!

QAL

Debbie K lectured about this months skill: strips, squares, & rectangles. She brought in 4 different versions for our inspirations. There will be a blog post coming soon, recapping this! For next month, bring a 20" portion of your border completed for a chance to win a prize. I personally can't wait to see what fabric choices everyone comes up with.

Special Topic: Weaving

Our very own Nicole gave a great presentation on weaving for February's special topic. She did a great job explaining how to weave with fabric strips. Thanks Nicole!  I hope to see some projects incorporating weaving at the upcoming Show & Tells.

BOM

We had a great turn out from January's BOM. There were 35 blocks in total, which Charlotte won! Ivy then presented the March Block of the Month: the modern maple leaf. Click here for more information on the color choices and how to construct this block.

Quilt News

Our VP of Events, Andrea, did a great job outlining some upcoming events. First, we voted as a group on a pattern for a Bag Making Sew Day to be hosted by our own Kate on April 22nd. (The Explorer Tote by Noodle Head was the final choice!) More details to come soon on this from Andrea!

Second, Andrea discussed the two teachers will we be hosting later this year: Latifah Saafir the evening of August 4th and all day of August 5th and Melissa Averinos the evening of November 3rd and all day of November 4th. Mark your calendars!

Community Service

Susan & Wanda discussed this years community service project. Our chosen charity is the Miami Children's Hospital. More details can be found on the blog post here. Can't wait to see how many Polaroid blocks we can make!

Challenge

The fabric for the Riley Blake Challenge was distributed. Shelly did a great job explaining the challenge. The rules can also be found here. Please remember, the deadline for the challenge is April 30th. However, SFMQG wants to display these items at the April meeting. Mark your calendars and start getting creative!

We had a great meeting and can't wait to see everyone in March!
