SFMQG August Meeting Summary

Lecture by Elizabeth DeCroos - Pojagi: From ancient Korea to modern Canada

● Elizabeth is a Canadian designer and teacher who works with pojagi, quilting, embroidery and sewing. Her focus today is the ancient Korean art of pojagi.

● Makes window hangings that look like stained glass with one layer of fabric

● Thread is typically visible and part of the design - uses whip stitch

● Has tutorials for stained glass effect on her website. (Machine piecing)

The Big 2023 QAL Reveal - Patti

● Electric quilt - dealt with interpretation of music, poetry, etc. and developing personal improv style.

● QAL for 2023 has concluded, everyone’s beautiful quilts were displayed from the gallery.

● Recipients receive a fat quarter and special pin - thanks for participating!

Mod Tech Mystery Challenge update

● Should be done with the quarter circle project at this point.

● Nancy is on an extended cruise, so she created a Youtube video that will be shared to participants via email with this month’s topic.

● Hillary London - raffle winner - congratulations!

Community Outreach Update

● Progress has been made - Maureen is piecing the blocks together.

Treasurer’s Report - AJ

● Ended July with $16,535 in bank

● Deposits $86

● Expenses $984 - paying for lectures and fabric for Quiltcon Community

Membership Report - Charlotte

● 1 new member, Laura O’Connor.

● 139 total members.

Charity Quilt - Susan

● Supporting SOS Children’s Village and nursing home

● Has a pattern but we are taking any quilts

● Susan usually delivers quilts in January.

● Keep making blocks that you would like collected toward these quilts as well.

● Has over 50 quilts made so far - keep up the great work!

Florida Fronds Delivery - Cathy

● The raffle winner is an oncology nurse named Michelle Bursztein in Hollywood. We reached out to her multiple times and finally was able to meet up.

She also won the Southern Stars raffle from BQE as well!

Workshop Update - Alison

● Bag making Sept. 9 - we don’t have enough people to run this in-person workshop. We may need to postpone it to another time if we do not get more participants - the Board will be discussing after this meeting. Taught by Carol Ann Ferrari, how to make a duffel bag. Post-meeting Board decision: we are going to let her know we need to cancel the class.

■ AJ will issue refund checks to registrants.

David Owen Hastings Oct. 28 - this will be opened up this week for registration. On influences of architecture in quilting. Post-meeting Board decision: Charging $55 per person for the course. Maximum 20 people. Members only registration available now at STORE.

● Irene Roderick - confirmed for March 23/24 2024 - will likely open for registration in January
