Unruly Word Play workshop with Tonya Ricucci

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting an UnRuly Word Play workshop in May!

"Noel" by Tonya Ricucci.

Some of us have already discovered the wonderful book Word Play Quilts by our very own Tonya Ricucci. In the book, Tonya introduces a new concept in LIberated, or improvisational quilting: free-pieced letters. Using her easy method, it's now possible to add another graphic element to our quilts. The free-piecing method is fun and easily adaptable to the individual maker's own style and requirements.

Participants in this workshop will learn Tonya's techniques for making letters and numbers, and for putting them together to form words and sentences.  Everything can be made in a huge range of styles and sizes, allowing each maker to express their individual style. You can work totally without rulers, or use rulers if you like!  During the workshop, you may chose to concentrate on learning the technique, making practice letters and numbers. Or, if you would like to start a project, you can begin an alphabet sampler (like the ones shown in the gallery below) or start making some word "bricks" to piece together as part of a quilt top after the workshop.

Once you learn this technique, the sky is the limit. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to add names to your baby quilts, or make seasonal wall hangings for decorating your home? Maybe you'd like to make a political slogan quilt for the upcoming Presidential election!  Or perhaps you'd simply like to "sign" your quilts with your initials and a date. I can't wait to try this out!

Please check out the gallery below for some inspiration and just a few ideas of how this technique can be used!
