Getting ready for Quiltcon 2017

Quiltcon 2017 will be held in Savannah, Georgia, Thursday February 23 to Sunday February 26th. Quiltcon is the annual gathering of modern quilters, organized by the national Modern Quilt Guild, of which SFMQG is a member guild. Each year Quiltcon rotates from the East coast to the West (Pasadena).

The event includes a HUGE quilt show, a HUGE vendor marketplace, and four days of modern quilting workshops, lectures, demos, and panel discussions.

Important dates you should mark in your calendar

  • May 15: Super Volunteer sign-ups open (closing May 30th) ** 16 hours over 4 days

  • June 1: Course Catalog released

  • June 20: Last day to become an MQG member for member registration

  • June 25: MQG Member Pre-Registration opens (closing June 31)

  • July 1: General Registration opens for the public

  • July 1: Quilt entries open

  • November 30: Last day for member registration*

  • November 30: Quilt entries close

  • December 1: General volunteer sign-up begins

The list of instructors, lecturers and panelists is truly a Who’s Who of modern quilting. You can see what the lineup looks like on the Quiltcon website.

If you are going, and you would like to sign up for any of the wonderful workshops on offer, you will need to set your alarm and be ready to log in on the day the MQG Member pre-registration opens.  To access the pre-registration, you will need to be logged in to your MQG account on the MQG website.  (Now would be a good time to check that you are able to log in to that account successfully!)

Workshop prices will be

  • Full day: $152 (SFMQG members) $192 (non members)

  • Half day: $79 (SFMQG members) $99 (non members)

Lecture prices will be

  • Per lecture: $12.75 (SFMQG members) $15 (non members)

  • Four day lecture pass $169 (SFMQG members) $199 (non members)

Even without doing a workshop or lecture, Quiltcon is well worth attending for the quilt show and vendor marketplace. A four day show pass is FREE to all SFMQG members who register before November 30th. ($30 afterwards)

And of course, we hope that all of our members will be encouraged to enter a quilt (or three) in the show. There are over $15k in prizes up for grabs! Categories include Improvisation, Group Quilts, Minimalism, Negative Space and Handwork - find a full list on the show website

As a guild, we will be participating once again in the Quiltcon Charity Challenge.  Our project organizer Kate Yates will be talking to us about that at the June meeting.

Travel options to Savannah from our area include driving (7 hours approximately) or train (10 hours).  There are no direct flights to Savannah from South Florida, but you can get connecting flights via Charlotte.

I hope you have enjoyed learning a bit about Quiltcon and I look forward to discussing it with you all at our future meetings.
