2017 Quilt Along Introduction

Welcome to Modern Medallions

Wow! Thanks so much for the enthusiastic response to our new Quilt Along at the January meeting. What is a Medallion quilt, you ask? It is simple. It is a quilt with a center block, surrounded by multiple borders.

This year, our goal is to learn some new skills and gain confidence in designing on the go. My personal goal is for everyone’s quilt to be unique and original. Let’s sew some things, change our mind, make some other things, designing and rearranging as we go. My design wall is my favorite tool.

I will present a new construction technique each month. Strips, half-square triangles and flying geese are among those on the agenda.  Choose from one or more of the many blocks presented each month. Incorporate a group of those blocks in your border or pick your favorite one, make it larger and use it for your center.  In addition, I will also share some of my favorite piecing and quilting tips.

1/4" seam allowance tutorial

If you missed this month’s meeting we talked about ¼” seams.  Are the seam guides on your machine accurate? Are you sure you are sewing an accurate ¼” seam? I know the guides on my machine are a little off. Here is a link to a tutorial on how to make sure you are sewing an accurate ¼ seam.

Are you ready? Is your head spinning?  Ahh… relax. This will be fun.  To get started, think about the size quilt you might want to make, fabrics you have been itching to cut into, an idea you might want to explore. Look at our pinterest board. I have been posting medallion quilts I have found around the web. And remember, we are not passing a box around; we will all work on our own quilts, from start to finish.

Lucky us! Jen at Red Thread Studio is offering the fabrics that Claire and I will be using to make our samples at a 15% discount. Click here to link to Red Thread Studio's SFMQG Page. To receive the discount, use the code SFMQGQAL at checkout. Select FREE Local Pickup at checkout if you want your fabric hand delivered to the next meeting.  Choose from these fabrics, pick from your stash or shop shop shop, all up to you. In addition, Jen donated Modern Medallion Workbook as this month’s giveaway. Congrats to Wanda Goldfarb, this month’s lucky winner!

I look forward to seeing your creations and sharing this journey with you.

 Til next month,

Debbie K
