August Meeting Topic - Negative Space

Read Between the Lines by Stephanie Ruyle - 3rd Place Negative Space - QuiltCon 2015

Wikipedia defines negative space in art, as the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image.

The Modern Quilt Guild states that Modern quilts have several characteristics which include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.

At the SFMQG meeting on Saturday Aug 15th 2015 the Topic will be Negative Space. We will be discussing and demonstrating the design of these quilts including the quilting of the Negative Space.

We will be asking for volunteers to interactively try these designs - bring your thinking caps.

Everyone would love to see your Negative Space quilts - please bring them to show & tell. Even if we have seen them before we’d like to view them again as they relate to the topic.

See you on Saturday!
