2024 Block of the Month Game - July - Quarter Log Cabin

2024 Block of the Month Game-July-Quarter Log Cabin

Welcome to July BOM!

This month is an easy, classic block: the Quarter Log Cabin.

We are following “Susies-Scraps” tutorial available here.

The final block size will be 10 ½” x 10 ½”.

Fabric Selection:

You will first need to look in your stash of fabric and divide it between light and medium/dark fabric. How can you tell? Do you trust your eye? You can use your smartphone to be sure. Take a picture of your fabric and edit the picture using the “noir” filter. In this YouTube video, Fran Morgan explains the process in greater details.

As a starting point to build your cabin, cut one 3”x3” square in (light/medium or dark) pink fabric.

Cut:

Prepare strips of light fabric:

One of each

3” x 2”

4½” x 2”

6” x 2”

7½” x 2”

9” x 2”

Prepare strips of medium/dark fabric: Here you may use all “medium”, all “dark” or a mix of the two, but no light fabric!

One of each:

4 ½” x2”

6”x 2”

7½”x 2”

9” x 2”

10 ½” x 2”

Assembly:

We will build the Quarter Log Cabin working only on two sides (not all around like a full log cabin). There will be the light side and the medium/dark side.

Start building the cabin by sewing the 3”x2” light strip to the right of the pink 3” x 3” square. Press. Turn the block so that the light strip is at the top, facing away from you. Sew the 4 ½” x 2” dark strip on the right of the pink square. Press. Turn the block so that the light strip is on the right and sew the 4 ½” x 2” light strip to the light strip side. Press. Turn the block so that the dark strip is on the right and sew the 6” x 2” dark strip. Keep going, alternating the light strips on one side, and the darks on the other side, until you have used all the strips.
