This past Saturday, Shelly Recicar introduced the February BOM and oh how I love the Wonky log cabin pattern and the pretty colors!
There is a wonderful tutorial for wonky log cabin blocks by Pauline (aka Quiltnqueen) on the Sew We Quilt website.
Fabric Inspiration for the Month is so pretty! Shelly chose a "south beach" palette for us. As usual there is a specially priced fat quarter bundle available for guild members at Stitchcraft. You can also shop from your stash! Here are the Kona color matches for you (with a general color indicator):
- Limelight (light green)
- Straw (taupe)
- Cedar (dark orange)
- Everglade (dark teal)
- Petunia (medium lilac-purple)
I know that many of you are partial to Kona, but I also listed Moda Bella Solid colors, because I’m a Moda Bella Solid fan at heart…although I have crossed to the dark side periodically and do have some Kona solids as part of my stash!
- Chartreuse
- Tan
- Amelia Orange
- Pond
- Petal Pink
The tutorial is wonderful and includes step by step photos which I'm sure you will all find useful.
A few additional tips for you:
- Blocks should finish at 11 inches square (after being trimmed).
- Use a 1/4” seam allowance
- Use a 50 weight cotton thread in a neutral color.
- Press away from center square and press after sewing each strip to your block.
- Stitch with RST (right sides together).
- When sewing a strip to the block, always place the new strip on the top of the block.
- Trim your thread ends after you have trimmed the block to size!
I'm sure you will all have fun sewing this block. Remember the more you make, the more chances you have to win the block lottery at our February meeting!
