2024 Block of the Month Game - January - Red Hot Cocoa

2024 Block of the Month Game - January

Welcome to the 2024 BOM Game!

Rules : Every month will bring a tutorial for an easy, quick to sew modern block. Do you want to join the game and prepare that block? You may end up trying something new and fun to sew! Plus, no need to buy fabric: use your fabric scraps and (hopefully) make a dent in your stash! Once your block is completed, place it in an envelope with one stamp and mail it to me *at least* one week before our monthly meeting. You have prepared a second block? Grab another envelope, a new stamp and mail it to me (please only one block per envelope). I will draw a name from everyone who sent me a block. One block means one chance to win. More blocks mean more chance to win. The lucky winner will receive all the blocks that were collected that month. Think about it…you may be able to prepare a top in a few hours or so just by assembling the BOMs sent by participants! Don’t want to keep the top? Do a good deed and donate it to our SFMQG charity! Your participation in the game is appreciated, encouraged, but not mandatory. You may want to participate one month and skip the next. The more people participate, the bigger the collection of blocks will be for the winner. Look for MarieF’s full name and address in your Roster.

January : Red Hot Cocoa

As a first block, let’s go with a beautiful block from the SFMQG June 2020 archive: Red Hot Cocoa. This block has a sentimental value for me. As a newcomer to the group and a beginner quilter, I was the lucky recipient of the block collection. I completed the quilt in January 2022, and it now proudly hangs on my wall at home.

Choose two colors, solids and/or  “read as”, either red, white, cream, beige, or brown. These are called color 1 and color 2.

Prepare three strips:

  • one 2.5” x 8.5” strip of color 1

  • one 4.5” x 8.5” strip of color 1

  • one 2.5” x 5” strip of color 1 sewn to a 2.5” x 3.75” strip of color 2

Assemble the two-color strip in the middle and sew the 3 strips together.

Here is for a SFMQG twist: Don’t follow “exactly” the measurements for the two-color strip! Instead, use any length for color 1 and 2 so it totals 8.5”. Use any width for that strip and flanked it by two strips of color 1 to total 8.5”. Don’t center that middle strip. Make it off-center by cutting color 1 strips wider or narrower.

Go Modern!

Work your own design and deliver an 8.5” square block.
