June 2021 Prompt
Hello my sandy QAL buddies! Hope your pedicure is fresh as you dipped your toes in the amazing Florida Flyover sand. Are you ready to start putting your sand components together to make an awesome strip of beach?
Last month, you were putting together your sand blocks. You should have a pile of 7.5-8.0 inch blocks to play with. Keep your sand colored scraps handy in case you need to add a little bit more sand to your beach.
Here. . . . . we. . . gooooooo……...!!!! You will be creating a strip of sand that will measure approximately 48 x 16 inches long. However, remember that this strip is go across your quilt top diagonally. So, it will sit on top of your blue strip and go to the opposite corner.
I have enclosed several pics of how to put your blocks together. Some of them will need to be split in half, so plan accordingly. These will be pieced diagonally.
Let’s first look at the finished quilt. See how the strip of sand moves diagonally across the quilt?
Here’s a close up of the sand strip.
Another close up: (you can also see the quilting)
Here are a couple of “exploded” ways to put your blocks together diagonally. This is using the larger triangles I was experimenting with:

A little clearer version of the beginning of strip pieced blocks.
These are examples on how to put your sandy blocks together. You can use this as a jumping off point to put your own spin on your Florida Flyover quilt. Just as long as it finishes approximately 48 x 16 inches on the diagonal (line it up with your water so you can remove portions and add to the other side if necessary).
You don’t need to sew it to your water section yet - - that will come later.
So, you have your work cut out for you! Get busy heating up with that sand section! Don’t be afraid to cut and slice and sew that shore together! And don’t forget to post on our Instagram page or our members-only Facebook page!

PS. . . Next month, we will be exploring beyond the sea and the beach. My FFQ has green and gray at the top. . . yours might have concrete where A1A touches the edge of the beach. . . or some brown mixed in as part of the everglades. . maybe a roller skater, sea birds of all kinds, or even a family traipsing to the sand with kiddos in tow. Put on your thinking caps as you are sewing so you will know what kind of scraps to get together!
