Welcome to the SFMQG Quilt-Along 2021!
This year’s theme will be. . . . .
The Florida Flyover Quilt!
This was inspired by a program from the Smithsonian Channel where they were showing flyovers of all the different shorelines in Florida from the Panhandle to the Keys and Gulf. Here’s a link to the full episode that inspired me to create the Florida Flyover Quilt.
Quick Facts:
1. The Quilt will be approximately 36 x 36 inches. Your quilt may vary in size.
2. There’s no signup and no charge for participating in the QAL. You may start at any time and “catch up”. We especially encourage our “faraway” guild members to participate and share your blocks each month. What a great souvenir of your guild participation!
3. Each month you will receive a prompt with information on how to construct your own Florida Flyover Quilt. This “prompt” will be a starting point for you to use to make the block or section of the quilt. Please keep in mind that your quilt is going to involve your own design choices, so it will not look exactly like anybody else’s. The QAL will go for six months - finish will be in October 2021. Six months of prompts with the last month of prompt including the putting together of all the elements.
4. Use this hashtag when you share #sfmqg2021qal
5. 3 prizes to be sponsored by guild member and supporter Jen at Red Thread Studio.
Now it’s time to discover the beauty of the Florida shoreline and make your own Florida Flyaway Quilt!
March 2021 Prompt
1. By this time, you have hopefully done a fabric pull. If not, you will need:
…Blue scraps, ranging from very dark to light blue. (for your water)
…Tan/eggshell scraps (Think sand color, all varying hues)
… Green scraps (for your plants that grow at the edge of the sand – I chose bright green scraps to emulate palms – you may choose a different color or add scraps of grey or other colors to emulate buildings/ roads/ etc)
Here was my original fabric pull for the water. I arranged my scraps from dark to light: (note – you may use solids, prints, batiks or a mix of all of them – the more variety the more interesting your quilt will be.
2. Your first block will be an 18- inch square block which will consist of blue scraps from dark to light – on the diagonal. See example below. This is so you can add the other blocks of the design
I sewed my scraps into strips and then sewed them on the diagonal. You may also cut them into squares or triangles. At the far right side, I also used a piece of a block from another project – check your scrap basket for those UFOs.
Does your water have any hidden fish? Is there perhaps a shark or a manatee hiding in there? How about a random crab near the shoreline? Remember that this is YOUR quilt and you may add any design elements you would like. Also because it’s an abstract quilt, your fish may consist of flying geese, your crab may be a few triangles and your manatee could be some curved pieces “floating in the water”. Feel free to use your imagination!
