2024 Block of the Month Game - March - “III”, as in “3”, or “Three”

2024 Block of the Month Game - March

Back with the BOM! Thank you for joining in!

Rules : Every month will bring a tutorial for an easy, quick to sew modern block. Do you want to join the game and prepare that block? You may end up trying something new and fun to sew! Plus, no need to buy fabric: use your fabric scraps and (hopefully) make a dent in your stash! Once your block is completed, place it in an envelope with one stamp and mail it to me *at least* one week before our monthly meeting. You have prepared a second block? Grab another envelope, a new stamp and mail it to me (please only one block per envelope). I will draw a name from everyone who sent me a block. One block means one chance to win. More blocks mean more chance to win. The lucky winner will receive all the blocks that were collected that month. Think about it…you may be able to prepare a top in a few hours or so just by assembling the BOMs sent by participants! Don’t want to keep the top? Do a good deed and donate it to our SFMQG charity! Your participation in the game is appreciated, encouraged, but not mandatory. You may want to participate one month and skip the next. The more people participate, the bigger the collection of blocks will be for the winner. Look for Marie F’s full name and address in your Roster.

Welcome to March! I present to you a quick and easy scrap buster for this month’s Block of the Month called, for lack of a better title, “III”, as in “3”, or “Three” in Roman characters.  Reason for this title is simple: March is the third month of the year, and as you will see in a moment, the block is composed of three stripes of multiple colors on a white background.

For this block, I was inspired by the work of Emily Van Hoff (@emilyvanhoff), an artist based in Chicago, who makes what she calls “minis” by assembling scraps of solids. Every “mini” is unique. Each 10”x10” BOM that you will create in March will be uniquely pretty!

Fabric:

You’ll need:

- white or read-white fabric and

- a random selection of solids and prints.

Here is how I suggest you select your solid and print fabric:

1.Close your eyes.

2.Plunge your hand in your scrap bag/scrap drawer/scrap container of solids and prints.

3.Pull one piece of fabric.

4.Repeat 25 times.

Cutting:

From your white/read-white fabric, you will need:

Two 3”x 12” and

Four 1.5”x 8.5”

From the scraps you pulled out of your magic scrap bag, cut each fabric 2.5” wide by any height between 1” to 2”. You don’t have to be precise on the height, but I recommend you try to keep the piece of fabric as a rectangle.

Piecing:

Randomly pick a rectangle and sew each piece of fabric with a ¼” seam allowance. The result will be a long ribbon. You should aim for at least 35 inches. Cut three stripes of 8.5” long.

Assembling:

Piece together the four white 1.5”x 8.5” stripes with the three scrappy 2.5”x 8.5” stripes as such:

White/scrappy/white/scrappy/white/scrappy/white

Piece the two 3”x 12” each at the top and the bottom of the block.

Complete:

Adjust to a 10”x 10” block

And…Done! It’s ready to mail: One block=one envelope=one stamp!

Or bring to March in-person meeting.

Thank you for participating and good luck in the draw!
