SATURDAY MAY 21ST, 2016

1 PM - 3 PM

PATCH REEF COMMUNITY CENTER
2000 W. YAMATO ROAD, BOCA RATON

Doors open at 12:30 for a little time to sign in, turn in your BOM, QAL boxes, Community Service blocks and socialize. The meeting begins promptly at 1 PM, and we will have a one hour Sewcial after the meeting for anybody who would like to work on the charity quilts or their own projects.

Icebreaker

What is your quilting kryptonite?

What quilting technique makes you start swearing? What haven't you even tried because you're too scared? What makes you reach for the seam ripper every time?

Quilt Along

Bring the traveling box and your completed block number three to the meeting.  Please check out the SFMQG Instagram or Facebook to see what our participants have been working on.  The blocks will be on display during the meeting and then it will be time to swap the boxes, again. Read about the QAL: launchblock 1block 2 and block 3.

Block of the Month

The block of the month for May is "Scattered Squares",  bring your completed blocks to display.  Also, bring jelly roll strips (2.5 inches x 18+ inches) in this month’s color palette, or black & white. We will have a raffle  to win the blocks or the jelly roll created from last month's color palette.

Special Topic : Block Printing on Fabric with Ingrid Schindall of IS Projects

The traditional method of block printing textiles is finding new life in contemporary art and design, giving fabrics a tactile, handmade look. Ingrid Schindall is the owner and operator of IS Projects, a printmaking and book arts studio in Fort Lauderdale's FAT Village arts and technology district. Ingrid will talk about the history and contemporary use of block printing for fabric design and production.  She will also treat us to a demonstration of the process, which involves carving a linoleum block with a design, and transferring that design to fabric. The technique requires only a few supplies and can easily be done on a DIY basis at home.

Swap

For our first swap this year we are making small projects embellished with an Initial or Monogram.  To make it interesting we have exchanged names, so we are making something for our swap buddy.  (If you missed the last meeting and you would like to swap, please contact me at secretary@southfloridamqg.com)  Bring your Initial/Monogram projects for swapping, we are excited to exchange and to see what you have made.

Quilt News & Events

Updates on Quiltcon 2017,  Quiltcon Charity Challenge 2017 and happenings in the quilt community.

Show & Tell

Bring your modern quilts and sewing projects to share and show off.  We would also like to see your progress on the Riley Blake challenge, bring what you have to show.  Also, bring your project from the Unruly Word Play workshop.  Allison needs two helpers to hold quilts up for show and tell.

Community Service

Please bring any blocks, tops and quilts that you have been working on for our Lap quilt project.  Help us get to 10 quilts in 2016!  The current completed quilt count is 5!

We look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday!
