SFMQG ELECTRIC QAL 2023 Month #4
SFMQG ELECTRIC QAL 2023 June #4
Happy June my QAL-lishous friends. Hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of the summer, keeping cool and sewing up a storm. It’s time for the next installment of the SFMQG Electric Quilt-A-Long.
By now, you should have a pile of star blocks and a lovely individual floating star-in-a-circle block. We are going to work with our star blocks in modules before we put everything together.
NOTE: these instructions will be for those making the Electric quilt top as originally shown –if you are choosing to go on your own, please do so! These instructions are just a “diving board” for you to jump into the improvisational pool of modern quilting!
Our “columns” that we will be putting together will consist of two trips of star blocks – one will go down one side and one will go along the bottom of our large floating star block. Each column will measure 18 inches long. Now here’s where your creativity comes in.
Your star blocks won’t measure 18 inches wide. You will need to add low volume strips to each side to be able to measure 18 inches in width. You can choose how wide you will make each strip (see attached pictures). Make sure to vary your strips so that your stars won’t be lined up in a straight even line in order to make your stars “twinkle”.
I made one set of “strip” stars by adding to each side. I also made one set of stars that are rotated on their sides (see the attached pic of how to add to the sides in order to make your stars tumble and twinkle.
Any questions about the directions? Need any input or suggestions? Please reach out to me at patriciaauten@bellsouth.net or on the SFMQG Members page (or through facebook messenger).
Happy improvising!!!
