Quilt Your Book QAL #2
Margie and MarieF welcome you back with book cover #2!
This month let’s challenge ourselves with appliqués!
This means that this month again, get inspired by:
⦁ Using fabric to match the cover of a book.
⦁ Focusing on one element,
⦁ Copying the layout, or
⦁ Enlarging a detail!
And by adding at least one appliqué detail to your block!
This technique may be something that you master already (Margie does). If this is however all new to you (like it is for MarieF), we recommend these resources:
- Ginny Robinson explains “what makes applique modern”. She does a quick demo of raw edge appliqué which you need to stitch to keep fabric from fraying.

Note that you will need to log in the MQG website (all SFMQG are MQG members) to access the info.
-Also on the MQG website, Shannon Brinkley “Scrappy Appliqué” tutorial is available on “Fresh Quilting Season 1, Episode 9”. You will also be able to download the “Magic Appliqué Design-Transfer Trick”.
-If free motion quilting is something fun for you, you may also look on Instagram for Sarah Becvar from Sussex, UK, @sarahbecvardesign She demonstrates freehand machine embroidery on scraps of fabric by “drawing” on the appliqué with thread to keep it in place.
Here’s Margie’s block to kick off this month’s challenge:
