We are all saddened by the shooting in Orlando early Sunday June 12th. Our sister MQG guild in Orlando immediately let us know they were going to organize a quilt drive for the survivors and victims families and asked for help. We just as quickly responded that we would participate because that’s what quilters do... make quilts to comfort those in need, and to show our love and support.
Here is the Orlando MQG post with their latest information.
Basically make heart blocks in rainbow colors with low volume background using this tutorial to create lap sized quilts. Any other heart pattern/technique is great too.
The MQG is supporting this effort and even created a Pinterest board with inspiration.
The SFMQG plan is to make as many heart quilts as possible. Deadline is September 1st.
Volunteers will take blocks to create modern layouts varying the scale and perhaps adding negative space. Nothing fancy but let’s show them some modern style. If you can finish the quilt that would be wonderful but not required.
We are optionally asking membership to donate:
- low volume fabric
- larger pieces of modern fabric for backing
- packages of lap or larger size batting
Keep making those blocks or other heart themed blocks or quilts. Two special Sew Days have been scheduled on Thursday June 23rd and Saturday June 25th 10am-4pm at Patch Reef Park. We’ll spend the days sewing, organizing and quilting. We are Sewing!
Please use the hashtags #quiltsforpulse #stitchedwithlove #orlandolove when posting. Checkout all the posts out there already - we are in great company.
We know this isn’t a lot of notice but we are hoping that you will have some time and/or resources to give to provide comfort and support.
