July 2021 Prompt
We’ve waded in the water and wiggled our toes in a LOT of sand over the last four months. Now it’s time to start getting your green and gray scraps together.
Last month, you were assembling your sand blocks in a looooong strip. Now it’s time to put the water and sand aside and start toward the next phase of the QAL.
You will be putting together the grass component. Technically it’s “sea grass” but for the sake of clarity, it’s going to be called grass. This is going to be a long 90 degree triangle that will go across the top of your quilt. It represents what you will see when leaving the beach.
For my “grass” component, I used various shades of green. I cut them randomly and put them together in small strips which I then sewed together into larger strips. Your finished measurement will be approximately 19 inches at the longest side of the triangle and 5 inches at the shortest part of the triangle with the horizontal width of around 38 inches. To visualize this, you can use butcher paper (exam table paper or similar) to draw a triangle that measures 38 inches across and 19 inches on one side tapering to around 5 inches on the other side – your measurements of course will vary). That will give you enough to sew on when we put together your components next month.
Design suggestion: not all beaches have grass up to the sandy part. Some have a mixture of grey and green and yellow grass and plants. Some beaches don’t even have any greenery (I’m thinking Fort Lauderdale beach where there is concrete and then parked cars along the side of the curbs – imagine how that would look from overhead). You are welcome to choose colors OTHER than green/grey. You can add cars, people strolling back with their umbrellas and coolers, or even a hoard of teenagers with surfboards. Keep in mind this is an abstract quilt and your design doesn’t have to be a literal depiction of people or cars or plants. This is the chance for you to put your personal design stamp on the grass component of your QAL. You can make your grass wavy or straight, skinny or thick (or a combo).
You don’t need to sew your components together just yet - that will come next month.
And don’t forget to post on our Instagram page or our members-only Facebook page! Use hashtag #sfmqg2021qal when you share.

P.S. ATTENTION!!! As I’ve mentioned, the lovely Jen from Red Thread Studio will be providing prizes for some of our participants (thanks to AJ for her hard work). But. . . . (and here’s the big but). . . you have to sign up! If you have been working on your Florida Flyover along with us, you’re in the thick of it. If you’ve been wanting to join, but need motivation, this is it! You can catch up by reading the previous blog posts. (You can be a local member or an online only member – you’ll just have to provide pics)
The requirement is that you have a finished quilt TOP by our September meeting. Next month we will be putting our components together and you can start working on finishing your FFQ. Please send an email to: patriciaauten@bellsouth.net with your name and address if you want in and will have a finished quilt TOP by the September meeting with the possibility of winning a cool prize from Red Thread Studio. (of course, we have fun participation prizes for everyone who makes a quilt top).
Again, any questions, please email me (Patti), or message me on our FB page (or FB messenger).
