Barn Quilt Painting Workshop

Come paint your own barn quilt!  This simple and fun workshop teaches you the basics of painting a barn quilt design.  The completed project will be suitable for indoor or outdoor display, and makes a great gift or unique addition to your home decor.  

We will be painting 24" square plywood boards.  One side will be pre-primed in white, or you can use the unfinished side for a rustic look.

Choose a fairly simple quilt block design that you love and/or that has special meaning to you.  Modern and traditional blocks are perfect, but curves may be tricky.  A 12 inch block design is easiest to scale up.  Go on Pinterest for plenty of inspiration!

Please choose no more than three or four colors for your block, and indicate your color choices in the signup form.  You are not obligated to use these colors, but it will ensure that we have enough paint for everyone.

Traverse Bag Workshop with Kate Yates

Please join us on Saturday, June 2nd for the Traverse Bag workshop with Kate Yates. During this workshop, we’ll work together to follow the Traverse bag pattern by Anna Graham (www.noodle-head.com). Participants will receive a copy of the pattern before the class, so they can prepare their fabric and interfacing. In class, we’ll learn how to assemble the bag. This is a fun pattern to make and a great skill-builder because you learn how to insert zippers in two different ways, insert snaps, create straps and piping! If you do all your prep work before class, you may be able to finish the bag in class (or get far enough so you can finish the pattern on your own at home).

Materials that you’ll bring to the workshop:

Requirements based on 44”-wide fabric. Mini size noted in { }.

• ¾ yard {½ yard} Exterior Fabric
• ¾ yard {½ yard} Lining Fabric
• ½ yard {½  yard} Accent Fabric
• 2 yards {1½ yards} Fusible Woven Interfacing (Pellon SF101 – 20″-wide) 

Recommended Fabrics: Cotton canvas, cotton/linen canvas, twill, home dec for exterior. Quilting cotton for accent and lining.

Additional supplies + tools: Polyester thread, water-soluble pen/tailor’s chalk, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter, glue pen (Sewline glue pen is my favorite), size 14 or 16 denim or Microtex needle, turning tool, ¼”-wide fusible web tape, piping foot

Price for the workshop will include the pattern and the hardware kit, which will include these materials:

• (2) ¾”-wide rectangle rings & (1) ¾”-wide strap slider
• 14” zipper {12” zipper} for top zipper closure*
• 8” zipper {6” zipper} for back zippered pocket*
• size 24 metal snap
• snap setting tool
• 1 yard of 1/8’’ diameter cotton cording for making piping

We’ll also bring tools for setting snaps (but you’re welcome to bring your own) and cording so that we can make piping for the bags (you’ll make the bias tape for the piping before class).

Tickets are available for members only for $25 through our store. This price includes the pattern and hardware kit – you supply the fabric and interfacing. When you sign up, you'll be asked to select your size (regular or mini) and hardware preferences. 

Michelle Wilkie Lecture and Workshops

Please join us the weekend of May 4th - 6th for a Lecture and 2 workshops with quilting instructor, Michelle Wilkie. 

About Michelle Wilkie

She lives in North Carolina with her husband and 10-year-old son.  She has loved being part of the quilting community and has a passion for Modern Quilting. She started quilting in 2012, and has gained a lot of experience and had many wonderful opportunities in that time. Her favorite part of quilting is designing and turning the design into reality.

She has taught classes of various topics for over 15 years to various audiences (kids, undergraduates to adults).  She now teaches a variety of quilting workshops, covering techniques of Quilt designing, Improvisational Piecing, Hand piecing and more. Michelle is a regular contributor to Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine and the MQG.

Saturday, May 5th: Improv Shapes and Lines Workshop

• Description: Improvisational quilting can be very freeing as there are no rules. This class introduces you to using various shapes, such as circles, triangles, string pieces to make your own unique improvisational quilt composition. Other techniques will also be covered to help you build your composition.

Sunday, May 6th: Modern Design - Spark to Design Workshop

• Once Upon A Quilt (map)
• Description: This class will illustrate and step you through how to create a Modern quilt design using inspiration from everyday things around you. Several exercises are designed to help you tune the skill of seeing, identifying design elements and building a composition. Once you have a design, skills to turn that design into reality will be shared.
• Design focused. There may be some time at end of class to use machines.
